Capacity Building for the Conservation of Leatherback Turtles in Bloody Bay, Union Island, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The grantee will work with the Union Island Environmental Attackers (UIEA) - a CBO - " to develop a sustainable local tourism product with livelihood opportunities for local people on Union Island by February 2012". Project objectives are to: "(i) train and certify 10 local tour guides in the practice of turtle watching and conservation; (ii) bridge the gap between public awareness, ownership, participation and sustainable livelihoods; (iii) purchase equipment which will augment, enhance and develop the existing practices of conservaiton and turtle watching as a viable tourism product; (iv) create a single standing cooperative company to facilitate the management and pracitce of turtle watching, bird watching and other sustainable tourism products o Union Island; and (v) determine the potential of making Bloody Bay a protected area".
