Establishing a Green School
The project aims to use solar panels, to generate sufficient electricity to power the lighting of the entire school building which houses, 5 classrooms, wash rooms, 2 offices, ITC room, library and lab. Other facilities include store room, Livestock houses, and kitchenette. This will be supported with battery storage capability for up to seven (7) days.
A composting system will be introduced to make available organic manure for the school?s organic crop production unit and for sale to the public. This approach will also help to maintain a clean environment, promote sustainable use of the agricultural lands ensuring that the soil remains fertile for future generations and bring much needed income to the school. The infertile arable land can be made fertile hereby ensuring the cultivation of healthy food crops for healthy living.
The objects of the project are:
- To reduce cost of electricity
- To promote sustainable use of agriculture
- To provide students with alternatives.
Activities for this project are:
1. Installation of Renewable Energy (solar) with back up system(battery storage facility) This will result in a fully solar powered school; reduction in cost of electricity; assisting to improve the image of Dominica as the nature island by example.
2. To promote sustainable use of Agriculture thus creating healthy produce and satisfied customers; clean school surrounding; cleaner greener healthier environment; students trained to construct a composting facility and create compost not only for use at school but for farmers in the Roseau Valley area. Students will develop an appreciation for agriculture as a business.
3. To provide students with alternatives thus creating well trained skills students; opportunity for future employment in the field of Renewable Energy; and opportunity for self development and entrepreneurship.
