Capacity - Building Component
- Project workshop was held with the participation of the Party committee and government, the national front in Ba To, Ba Dinh and Ba Vi commune leaders, women union officials and representatives of 06 households in Ba Dinh and Ba Vi - 02 technical training on care, veterinary hygiene and disease prevention in local chicken raising for technical staff and 20 households selected in Ba Vi and Ba Dinh communes - 02 training courses on farming techniques and methods of sanitation and disease prevention in commercial breeding chickens for technical staffs and 20 H're breeding birds farming households and 15 commercial farming households (in 19-20 November, 2011) - Organized study tour to the H're chicken conservation model for 60 delegates for other GEF projects - Seminar on sharing the experience with the participation of district leaders, 20 local farmers
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Ba To district of Quang Ngai province has an natural area of 111,635 ha, in which the potential are for agricultural forest production was 1205 ha uncultivated, representing 1.09% of total natural area Ba To district is a mountainous district, with 7 communes with special difficulties. District population was 50,413 people with 11,797 households distributed over 99 villages and 6 urban groups of 20 communes and towns. Ethnic minorities accounted for 84.6% of the district population. Agricultural labor was 44,000 and non-agricultural labor was 5600 people Economic life of the people in mountainous districts of Quang Ngai in general and in Ba To in particular was in poverty, limited land resources, severe weather, the production level and the low ability to apply advanced scientific technical progress. The proportion of agriculture and forestry in the economic structure accounted for 67.67%, basic construction industry accounted for 15.06%, 17.26% for commerce. Total grain output in 2008 reached 18,688.9 tons, the yield increasing of 39.96%, food per capita increased 372 kg / person / year. The herds structure in Ba To commune include cattle, pigs, chickens The potential for livestock development in general and chicken raising by indigenous ethnic minorities on an orientation of semi-wild, organic and ecological and safe food hygiene was very large. The project carried out in two communes in Ba Vi and Ba Dinh. With an area of 132.9 km2 and a population of 8979 people, ethnic minorities accounted for the most part and the poverty rate was 44.6%. The main income of the people was breeding and cultivation, in which cultivation played a key role. The breed of H're chickens origined long ago, with good disease resistance and low investment.
