Return Trees to Forest
Return Trees to Forest
The project will achieve this objective by investing its efforts in achieving the sustainable management of natural resource such as;
1. the waters and fisheries of the Sesongsoy river,
2. the riparian woodland and Sacred Forest which provide protection to these resources and non
timber forest products to the village populations
3. and in maintaining the fertility and structure of the soil which supports the subsistence agriculture
on which these villages rely.

The project will promote and train farmers in ecologically sound agricultural production methods, the use of seed varieties that will increase crop yields and will investigate the feasibility of growing alternative subsistence and cash crops that are more resilient to climate change risk factors. Furthermore, the project will increase resilience of community by increasing their capacity to support themselves through seed cultivation, fingerling raising, developing new markets and investigating a potential irrigation scheme. It will build on the community?s traditional social support structure by safe guarding the local Sacred Forest and developing a seed bank and village fund which increase the villages? capacity to cope with crop failure due to climatic factors.

Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The project relies on the participation of all the villagers to cooperate with the formulation and implementation of both the fisheries and forestry management plan and with the preparation, planting and protection of the tree seedlings/saplings. While most of the sustainable agriculture activities will benefit those villagers that own land, the project Executive Committee and each of the village committees will ensure that villagers without land are included in training activities such as growing vegetable seeds in gardens, raising frogs etc and will have an opportunity to sell their labour to implement new activities or processing village products. Furthermore, those villagers without land will have an opportunity to benefit from the community revolving fund.
Capacity - Building Component
The project will give priority to capacity building of community leaders and awareness raising of the population as well as strengthening of management committees to ensure sustainable project interventions when the project is phased out. The facilities and equipment provided by the project will be common community assets and revolving fund will be managed by selected community members. Government district officers, who will be included in the project training activities will also continue to provide required support to the communities when the project phases out. It is anticipated that district advisors from MAF will have the capacity to provide technical assistance for most of the Outputs proposed by the project. However, provision has been made in the development of the budget to employ technical assistance from outside of the district should the need arise. For example, provision has been made in the budget agricultural training to be carried out at the Integrated Rural Agriculture Development Centre at Tao Seno near Savannakhet. Provision has also been made for training for fingerling raising from LARReC.
