Strengthening local adaptive capacity of fisheries village: the case of Do Son, Hai Phong
Strengthening local adaptive capacity of fisheries village: the case of Do Son, Hai Phong
Do Son is known as one of the cradles of traditional knowledge on fishing in Northern Vietnam, and has a treasure of local knowledge and culture, especially in how to respond to the sea. Hirorically, Do Son has been well known for its eight fishing villages of V?n Lê, V?n L?, V?n Ngang, V?n Tác, V?n Th?c, V?n Bún, V?n H??ng and V?n Hoa. The inhabitants in the ?eight villages? in Do Son formed fishing villages with their own specific features, as evidenced by their different working styles, living styles, knowledge, traditions and cultures, as well as their religious beliefs. Over time, however, this valuable traditional knowledge and local experience have been disappearing and are now living in these fishing villages.

The collection, preservation, selection and application of traditional knowledge and local experience as in how to avoid sea storms, identify the currents, predict the fishing ground for exploration, etc., will contribute to helping the fishermen in limiting the risks in the sea, improving the livelihood and protecting the natural resources, especially in the global context of climate change.

Project planned activities
(1) Collect, preserve, restore and apply traditional knowledge in the context of climate change;
(2) Experiment with models of sea economy development on the basis of exploration and promotion of traditional cultural values;
(3) Improve the capacity of fishermen in these communities via training activities as well as education plans.

Expected results
(1) Materials on traditional knowledge of the community and the fishermen in the villages related to the exploration and management of marine resources, as well as protection of marine environment and resources are developed.
(2) Traditional knowledge is evaluated in the context of climate change and recommendations for the preservation and adoption of the management and the protection of marine environment and resources, as well as local sea economy development.
(3) Models of sea economy development that explore and promote the traditional cultural values are successfully trialled (model of community sea tourism, combining sea exploration and cuisine tourism; model of production ships, model of community credits).
(4) The awareness and capacity of the community in the management and protection of the marine environment and resources are improved.
