Community action for environmental conservation and management

The aim of the project was to build capacities in environmental management focusing on environmental education. The project was implemented in selected schools and communities in the Lower and Upper Nuimi Districts of The North Bank Region- one of the most environmentally degraded regions of the country.The specific objectives of the project were: to promote afforestation and reafforestation in targeted communities using indigenous tree species, to facilitate environmental education and communication initiatives in selected schools and to create awareness among project beneficiaries on environmental and natural resources governance.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A key element of the project was capacity building for project beneficiaries. The project included some strong elements of capacity building designed to ensure that the beneficiaries are equipped with the desired skills and knowledge vital for project success.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The focus of this project was to increase the awareness levels of the beneficiaries on the environmental challenges of the day. The project developed various means of creating awareness of the global environment including establishing environment clubs, holding radio talk shows on the environment and carrying out a study tour to different ecosystems to highlight their importance.

Gender Focus

The project also targeted women and the youth in the project villages. This category of the population are often the most vulnerable and marginalized. Their participation in the project was designed to empower them in order for them to contribute effectively to the protection of the environment.

Notable Community Participation

The project specifically targeted certain communities for participation in execution. using a system of community participation which has proven very effective, the grantee worked with these communities in all aspects of project implementation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project was implemented in rural settings where the beneficiaries are small scale farmers whose livelihoods depends on the health and resilience of their environments. Proper management of their environments is therefore crucial to the sustenance of their livelihoods.

Policy Impact

The project would contribute greatly to government's polic of increasing public awareness as a means of protecting the environment.

Project Results

- A 5-day workshop on agro-forestry practices conducted.

- 20, 000 trees mostly of native species planted by communities, schools and individual farmers in the participating project villages

- Fencing materials procured and distributed among the project communities.

-119 participants from 3 districts attended and participated in anti- bush fire campaign.
-
-Environmental clubs established in 3 schools and existing ones reinforced with support.

-2 day environmental education training workshop conducted for school teachers and 4 local environmental education trainers and 5 -day training of trainers concluded.

-Environmental training and learning materials including t-shirts, 550 posters, audio cassettes and audio -video tapes produced with messages in english and the local language, distributed to schools and the local community.

-Environmental tour organized for and attended by environmental clubs and social and environmental studies teachers to an island harbouring turtles, migratory birds and a vartiety of fish undertaken.

-8 sessions of airtime talk radio dealing with range of topics from waste dumping to inappropiate cutting down of mangroves completed.
