Improving Livelihoods and Environment through Preservation and Development of Traditional Mills and Grinders
Agro-processing is a very important activity for the farming communities in Bhutan. Rural households depend to a large extent on indigenous agro-processing techniques like water mills and grinders for their daily life and used by a majority of the people in rural Bhutan.

The water mills are largely used in Bumthang Dzongkhag (district), the one of the huge producer of wheat, barley and buckwheat crops. The water mills (locally known as chuthag) is traditionally used to generate mechanical power for the purpose of grinding food grains. The wooden ?turbines? made by local carpenters, are rotated using water which drive the grinding stone to grind corn, wheat, and other grains for the local agricultural community. These traditional chuthags/water mills are constructed with wooden runners and chutes as woods are readily available. Since every household uses the traditional mill, large number of good and strong trees are fallen to make the strong wooden turbines for mill. In addition, since the mills are made out of wood, the durability of the turbines are short; the turbines are easily worn out or broken in short six months.
