Environmental conservation and critical watershed management
Pemathang gewog is one of the remotest gewogs in Samdrup Jongkhar. The people living in the gewog depend on livestock rearing for their livelihood. Due to lifestyle of people living in gewog, they consume high volume of firewood. The firewood is used almost for everything every day; the firewood is used for cooking, fodder cooking and brewing of alcohol. The high consumption of firewood and increased cattle grazing are gradually pressurizing the forest cover in the region, degrading the land and affecting the environment. Also, the increasing use of firewood pollutes the atmosphere by CO2 emission.
Therefore, recognizing the gradual increase in threats to environment, the project ?Biogas and water source protection? is carried out by ?Pemathang Biogas Tshogpa and Phedi Water Source Protection Group? with support from SGP, Bhutan to reduce heavy dependence of communities on forest and emission of CO2 and other GHG emission.
