The Parque Natural do Monte Gordo faces serious problems in combating invasive plants species. Every year park management in collaboration with local communities, especially women of Monte Cintinha, engage in removal of invasive species, while introducing endemics, as a way of ensuring park environmental sustainability.
The community of Monte Citinha, in a quest to lead the next initiative, proposed a project which aims to remove invasive plants species from areas indicated by park management. While the initiative will be to remove invasive species the community will be also introducing endemic species. This will ensure that selected areas will be free of invasives. The women involved will be also trained on how to use some of the invasive to produce handicrafts, and therefore provide them with a sustainable alternative livelihood.
