Installation of solar water heaters for boarding students at St. mary Goreti Secondary School, Moshi

Context:

St. Mary Goreti Secondary School started in year 1999 it has 1020 students out of this 950 are girls and 70 are boys. The school is connected to electricity supplied by TANESCO. The school uses electricity to boil water for bathing. In July the temperature in Moshi reached 12 degrees centigrade. Using electricity for this purpose is very expensive. The project will reduce the operation cost of the school and thus benefits the community whose children are schooling at St. Mary Goreti.
Project primary Objective:
To achieve low cost and sustainable energy for water heating for boarding students

Secondary Objective:
To reduce operational costs by cutting down electricity bill
Reduce fire incidence caused by short circuits in electrical conductors for water heaters

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

The Parents of the students in this schools contributes on the maintenance of the solar system as well as expansion of the system to cover more areas of the school.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Use of Solar for heating water has reduced the school costs on electricity and fuel wood. Further more it is contributing in sustainable forest management since the school was using about one tone of fuel wood in a month for the purpose of water heating and cooking. The serving due to use of solar has supported the school to purchase more educational equipment and maintenance of school. Solar lights has also increase the time for reading as it is used as light back up during the times when there is no electricity from the National grid..

Project sustainability

The project sustainability lies on operation and maintenance which the school has trained a permanent staff to maintain this solar system.

Capacity - Building Component

The use of solar has been a true demonstration to the students on sustainable energy. Students are trained on solar use, benefits and maintenance as future energy source. The school has trained a permanent staff on operation and maintenance of the solar system.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The use of solar has promoted public awareness on sustainable energy in promoting good hygiene among school. This demonstration has been copied by hotels and hospitals where there is high need for hot water for both cleaning and bathing.

Replication of project activities

This project as served as a demonstration at the area which is visited by many parents. It has been replicated mainly by Hotels and Hospitals. There are also families who has students at this school who have replicated the project ate their homes. The project has a great impact on reducing energy needed by families for boiling water for bathing.The solar light provides back up light in the incidence where there is power cut thus students classes and study programs are not affected.

Gender Focus

This school aim at increasing number of girls in the field of science. It aim at providing enabling environment for girls to perform well in science studies.

Project Results

The main result of this project has been demonstration to other community the use of solar as sustainable energy.

The project has contributed to the reduction on the number of students suffering diseases related to use of clod water for bathing from 7 per class to non in the year 2013. This has increase attendance in class and performance in examination.

The project has increased time for studding during the night as solar lights has provided back up to electricity during power cuts from electricity company (TANESCO).

The project has reduced the use of fuel wood for boiling water for bathing by 100%. there is no more boiling water for bathing using fuel wood in this school.

The project has reduced the incidence of fire in the dormitories as students were using candle in the events of power cuts. Two schools in Kilimanjaro has been into fire due to the use of candle for studies.
