REMEDIATION OF SANDPITS ON THE TERRITORY OF MINSK REGION AS A METHOD OF RESTORING DEGRADED LANDS AND CONTRIBUTION TO MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
REMEDIATION OF SANDPITS ON THE TERRITORY OF MINSK REGION AS A METHOD OF RESTORING DEGRADED LANDS AND CONTRIBUTION TO MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
The overall aim of the project: Remediation of abandoned sandpits (unauthorized waste dumps) and prevention of soil degradation on territories of Minsk region through afforestation and meadow formation and implementation activities on prevention possibility of their appearance in future.

To achieve this goal following tasks need to be addressed and results are expected:

1. Establishment of the system for the prevention the formation and use of sandpits as unauthorized waste dumps.
?Unauthorized waste dumps in abandoned sandpits are eliminated by volunteers from the residents of adjacent areas of village councils and members of associations gardeners with the participation of organizations involved in the project;
?New illegal waste dumps are not appeared at the territories adjacent to the villages and associations gardeners;
?Volunteers from the local communities provide the public monitoring and prevention of illegal dumping;
?At least 5 village councils of Minsk region are involved into project implementation activities.

2. Remediation of lands, followed by planting forests and grass cover on degraded lands
?At least 22,3 hectares of degraded lands are restored. Land is returned back into the economy and used in ecologically sustainable way, contributing to the climate change negative impact mitigation;
?At least 40% of the local councils population involved into the project implementation;
?The main result of the project for the local communities became the elimination of not less than 5 unauthorized waste dumps (landfills) on their territories, as sources of increased environmental hazard and injury.

3. Sharing the experience of the project on other territories of the Minsk region
?As the result of project activities results at least 5 village councils of Minsk region studied project results and applied approaches in practice;
?Based on the project results on remediation of sandpits remediation activities on other sandpits in Minsk region are developed and approved by the Regional government for 2012-2014.
