Enterprise Development while Protection of Environment

The Lao Handicraft Festival is the only festival in Laos. It provides local producers with the opportunity to establish trade-relations and thereby increase their income and livelihoods on a longer term; it encourages the Lao government to recognize the value of the Lao handicrafts and the value of handicrafts for the Lao identity. SGP grantees across the country will be identified and select to participant the festival. This will open up community products.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Most of the members were women but gender training was organized twice

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The products brought from communities mostly were sole and every time they received significant amount of money.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

There was multi-ethnic groups facilitated by project to attend events through out the projects lifetime; because this project focus on supporting indigenous handicraft products from all parts of country

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

There were a lot use of natural color in handicraft works especially with fabric production. Members are well know the important of trees that provide them good color. Therefore in every communities that become members of project, community-forest was one of the most topics or issues that brought to discuss

Notable Community Participation

This project mainly working with members of Lao Handicraft Association through out the country. It is for facilitating members to open their products to wider market. Lao Chambers of Commerce as grantee had identified handicraft market oriented products then organize training for the members to produce and supply to market. This process make communities opportunities to make decision which products were their fit.

Capacity - Building Component

Through out the training and participating in National Handicraft Festival, villagers/weavers/communities' hand made handicraft gradually build their reputation. They also had chances to meet with buyers and discussed about the products. In every events that attended by project members, the members attended several seminars.

Project Results

This the pilot project of facilitating projects that were and has been granting through SGP to open their products and or learnings to wider environment. There were two national events organized during this project lifetime (the 10th and 11th National Handicraft Festival). More than 20 projects that granted through SGP scheme were selected to attend the events and more than 50 communities members whose made products using project fund attended with products. Most of them received US$2000-3000 back home every time. Various of workshops were organized at the events and those facilitated members to approach or hearing from buyers about their products. They had opportunity to voice up what benefit they made for the environment in general through the conservation and sustainable development by their hands.

This project is now under the final evaluation.
