Promotion of Renewable Energy for Sustainable Production and Protection of Natural Resources

This project seeks to address climate change and biodiversity issues while supporting sustainable livelihoods. The Jamaica Federation of Commercial Apiculturists will be establishing a solar powered drying house to support the development of pollen production. This will assist bee keepers in 5 of Jamaica's 14 geographical regions. Additionally, The Golden Grove Women Entrepreneural Group will produce solar dried fruits and spices for sale. This will allow them to use the natural resources in their area for supporting livelihoods in a sustainable manner. It will also provide employment in a community in which the rate of unemployment is very high.

The final component of the project will be reforestation. This will be done within the context of using biodiversity resources to support the beekeeping industry. The link will therefore be made between environmental preservation and livelihoods.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The goal of this project is to generate sustainable livelihoods. The targeted communities suffer from low levels of employment and the women are desirous of establishing a fruit and spices business as they have these commodoties growing in abundance. Secondly, most of the pollen that is currently being sold in Jamaica is imported. The project seeks to increase the sale of local pollen as they seek to diversify the livelihoods of local bee keepers.

Replication of project activities

The group is hoping to replicate this initiative in other communities.

Gender Focus

The project has a strong gender focus. The Golden Grove Women's Entrepreneural Group will be pursuing beekeeping and sustainable agro processing and are some of the main beneficiaries of the project

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The targeted communities suffered from a high rate of unemployment while the residents watched fruits going to waste yearly. The community women decided to use the resources around them to earn income and will be drying these fruits for sale

Notable Community Participation

The targeted communities will be integrally involved in project implementation. Community mobilization will be very important to the success of the project as all activities are geared towards providing assistance to community members to generate sustainable livelihoods. Mobilization will be done through community meetings, flyers, notices, phone calls and face to face discussions. The activities will be community driven as the participants will be given assistance to run their own businesses

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The training that will be done in forest values and solar technology will incorporate global environmental issues; namely, deforestation, biodiversity management and climate change mitigation.

Project sustainability

There is some level of sustainability based on the number of persons trained in various areas. With the installation of the solar dryer for the women's group this they expressed has been very good for them in terms of contributing to their livelihoods which they believe is sustainable. On the other hand pollen is a very nutritious food and there is high demand for this product. Also with the beekeeping component with generates another by-product - the honey.

Capacity - Building Component

Training will be an important component of this project. persons will be trained in forest issues and the importance of forests top maintaining their livelihoods. This will be done within the context of biodiversity values. Additionally, training will be provided in various business management skills to enhance the success of the entrepreneural aspects of the project

Project Results

Installation of Solar Dryer and Electrical System to be used by the female group to process dried fruits etc.

Pollen drying facility with collectors was constructed

Training of agro-processors conducted in Renewable Energy Technology and members are now selling products in the local community and seeking to expand their reach into adjoining communities.

100 Pollen traps were installed and forty five (45) persons trained in pollen collection and processing

Benefits received by the participants and/or the recipient communities include.
a) part time employment
b) capacity building in various areas (financial mgnt, business management etc.)
c) significant reduction in the cost of electricity
d) increase asset base in the form of dryers and solar system
e) capacity to develop other products
