Piloting Biodiversity Education in Jamaican Basic Schools
Piloting Biodiversity Education in Jamaican Basic Schools
This project seeks tp address national and global environmental problems through education and awareness building. Jamaica has a high rate of endemism and is rich in natural resources. However, many of our natural resources are under threat from human activities that degrade the environment. The Ministry of Education has taken steps to change attitudes towards the environment by including environmental education in the school curriculum at various levels. The new early childhood curriculum has identified respect and concern for the environment as one of the desired learning outcomes. However, in many instances, teachers do not possess the requisite knowledge and skills and schools are not equipped with the physical facilities to effectively teach this area of the curriculum. This project seeks to support the delivery of the curriculum through training of teachers and providing practical learning resources such as gardens, aquatic ecosystems and forest areas to enhance environmental learning through practical activities. The focus will be on biodiversity education as this theme is appropriate for the targeted age level (3 to 6 years) and many environmental issues can be taught within the context of this theme
