Project on Reduction of POPs at the Source of Yangtze River and Development of Alternative Livelihood to Achieve Sustainable Grassland Management
Project on Reduction of POPs at the Source of Yangtze River and Development of Alternative Livelihood to Achieve Sustainable Grassland Management
Main problems:
1.with the open of Qinghai-Tibet railway and the fast development of local economy and tourism, the population of Tanggulashan township is increasing fast, which brings environmetal issues. Waste becomes an outstanding problem; in addition, increasing waste is directly threatening the grassland ecosystem and water safety of source of Yangzte River, which hasn't draw government and public attention;

Project activities/solutions:
1.print brochure on POPs knowldge and waste classification and recycling
2.establish 'waste for goods' system and database based on Conservation Station
3.encourage tourist to bring classified, disinfected, packed waste to Germu city for treatment
4.professional training for local residents for new career development to reduce their relying on grassland
5.develop eco-tourism of Tuotuo River including drifting, home stay, horse racing and Tibeten culture tour

10. provide a public space to locals for ecological conservation experiences exchange based on Conservation Staion
11. promote project results and share experiences and lessons learned

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. reduce 150 tons of burning wates and around 5000 used batteries through effective wates management to reduce POPs and mercury pollution risk at the sources of Yangzte River
2. about 50 local farmers obtained career training, 3 handicrafts are developed; 20 local women involve in eco-tourism and their income increase 1000RMB per year; 2400 ha. of granssland are protected through alternative livelihood
