Partnership for Nature

The overall objective of the project is to ensure / maintain a favorable conservation status of the Natura 2000 site "Bazinul Ciucului de Jos (Lower Basin of Ciuc River)" and of the Protected Natural Reserve "Piatra Soimului (The Hawk?s Rock)", especially the species / habitats of global and local interest, by: (i) enforcing special conservation measures and improving communication between stakeholders; (ii) promoting sustainable use of natural resources and encouraging private initiatives in eco-tourism development as an alternative income generating activity for local community. Specific information campaigns will be carried out to promote biodiversity conservation, to increase the respect for its values, to incorporate the cultural and traditional values of the region.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

5 women will participate in the planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation activities of the project and 100 will be involved in information and training activities.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

50 locals will be involved in meetings, 30 local pupils in training and about 4000 persons in informing activities.

The SGP project has connection with GEF project "Improving the Financial Sustainability of the Carpathian System of Protected Areas"

Notable Community Participation

The communities of "Bazinul Ciucului de Jos (Lower Basin of Ciuc River)" (Sancraieni commune, Sansimion commune, Tusnad commune and Baile Tusnad city), three NGOs and one local public administration (TUSNAD City Hall) are participating and co-financing the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on biodiversity conservation, climate change issues and sustainable transport.

Project sustainability

The management of the two protected areas will be done sustainably according to the management plans developed within the projects. The Junior Ranges Clubs will continue their activity. The Local Action Group established within the project will continue to represent the local communities' in the decision making process.

Replication of project activities

The project activities can be replicated in any other protected area with similar geographic and socio-economic conditions.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities' (information materials, training sessions, practical activities) contribute ti the capacity building of the local population related to biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation, through the establishment of the "Organizational and functional regulation" of a Natura 2000 site and a Nature Reserve, a Junior Ranger Club, promotion of Eco-tourist destinations, presentation of the protected areas through an information caravan, realization of a thematic and three cycling paths, promotion of tourism, non-motorized transport around the protected areas.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainability of livelihoods through enforcing special conservation measures and improving communication between stakeholders; (ii) promoting sustainable use of natural resources and encouraging private initiatives in eco-tourism development as an alternative income generating activity for local community.

The up-scalling of the present project activities was included in the application submitted for financing under European Fund for Regional Development. The application was successful and 100,000 USD were allocated for
