ECO Oltet Valley

The overall objective of the project is to promote, demonstrate and increase the efficiency in using renewable energy sources. The project, to be implemented in three rural areas, will carry out information campaigns on the climate change effects and the possibilities to contribute with local initiatives to the reduction of GHG emissions; will demonstrate the use of solar energy for producing warm water in public buildings. The efficiency of an existing pellet manufacturing workshop will be increased by establishing an energetic culture on 2 ha of degraded lands, in three rural communities in order to mitigate the effects of climate change, sustainable use of biodiversity and conservation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

150 locals are involved in training activities, 30 locals will benefit from improved techniques on sustainable land management, 20 persons will be instructed on project development, monitoring and evaluation, the living conditions of 2000 community members will be improved through the project activities.

Policy Influence

At local level two policies regarding the use of renewable energy sources, and one regarding the use of degraded land were influenced by the project activities.

Project sustainability

In the following years, when the biomass from the Myscantus plntation will increase in quantity, the workshop will continue to produce pellets. ARDC will continue to support the OC from Lalosu in administrating this activity.

Notable Community Participation

The communities of Lalosu, Fauresti and Oboga communes and the local public administrations of these communes and one NGO are co-financing the project.

Replication of project activities

The final Conference organised at the project closure was attended by representatives Local Public Administration from the neighboring communes, who showed a great interest in replicating the establishment of Myscantus plantation with the double benefit of rehabilitating some degraded lands and producing biomass for energetic purposes.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the climate change issue and use of renewable energy sources.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, press releases, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to renewable energy sources through using solar systems, increasing the efficiency of an existing pellet manufacturing workshop, by establishing a Miscanthus Giganteus culture.

Gender Focus

The project activities have a gender focus, assuring the complete participation of women in all stages of the project, especially of those who have children of school age, which will benefit from the installment of solar systems on the schools located within the target communities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of using renewable energy sources through solar systems and by by establishing an Miscanthus Giganteus culture to secure the raw materilal for the pellets manufacturing workshop.

Project Results

- 2 ha of energetic culture established
- 9 training sessions on climate change issues, energy efficiency and sustainable use of biomass, delivered and 150 persons trained
- 2 trainings on project management, monitoring and evaluation delivered for the members of local NGOs
- 30 persons involved in practical works regarding land management
