Brown of Maramures ? biodiversity conservation, tradition and assurance of well-being

The project ?Brown of Maramures - biodiversity conservation, tradition and assurance of well-being? aims at conservation of biodiversity in the hilly and sub-mountainous areas of northern part of Maramures County, with the support and in the benefit of local communities. Specific activities will be carried out (i) to support the conservation of the local cattle genus ?Brown of Maramure??, (ii) to maintain and improve the flow of services provided by the agricultural and forests ecosystems, (iii) to promote the development of alternative solution for income increase.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

75 households participate at trainings on the cattle breeding, 400 households apply traditional methods of conservation of the local cattle genus, 30 locals participate on an experience exchange trip, 40 youngsters participate on mountain hay meadows conservation trainings, 75 women participate at trainings on milk processing, 1000 persons participate at information activities.

Gender Focus

At the reference area of the project, the main activities of the locals is animal breeding and wood processing. The role of women is exclusively household maintenance. The project proposes to sustain women to be able to capitalize milk based products. The local women hold the traditional recipes of milk processing, which makes the area specific of their cheese products, which can become local brands.

Notable Community Participation

The communities of Sapanta, Barsana, Berbesti, Giulesti communes, Sighetul Marmatiei town and the local public administrations of these localities and two NGOs are co-financing the project.

Project sustainability

The association ACT Bruna will continue to monitor the reproduction of this genus in order to conserve its specific characteristics. The model plot of hay meadow, established within the project, will be continuously maintain by the project partner SCBD Sighetul Marmatiei.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute ti the public awareness on the biodiversity conservation.

Planning non gef grant

The maintenance of mountain hay meadows in direct connection with cattle breeding is of interest in many other regions in Romania. The grant recipient intends to establish a partnership with NGOs from Moldova (Suceava county - an area with similar conditions) and submit a joint application under eea grants programme - Sustainable Development component.

Replication of project activities

The maintenance works of the model hay meadow and the traditional milk processing to produce pressed cheese are already replicated by the landlords from neighboring communes.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, press releases, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to biodiversity conservation, conservation of a local cattle genus from Maramures county and income generating activities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of producing traditional milk based products for income generation. The project will result in at least two traditional milk based certified products, which could increase with 10% the incomes of the local households.

Policy Influence

Three communes, represented by both local people and Local Public Administrations were involved in this project. The main conclusions and recommendations of the project, especially the ones referring to the sustainable use of lands, were included by the Local Public Administrations in the Local Development Strategies.

Project Results

- one local genus of cattle (Bruna de Maramures) conserved;
- 15% increase in number of animals of Bruna genus (in the 75 households benefiting of high quality seminal material).
- 5 new milk collecting centers established
- 20 ha of model hay meadows sustainably managed by applying traditional methods
- 400 households applying sustainable management methods on their lands
- 20% increase in the hay production on the plots applying the recommended measures
- three training sessions carried out (attended by 90 persons)
- 12% increase in local households' income by better valorisation of milk products.
- 500 copies of A Good practice guide printed and distributed
- 1,000 persons informed.
