Zero carbon Synergy at Corund-Praid

The overall objective of the "Zero carbon Synergy at Corund-Praid" project is to contribute to the sustainable development of Corund Praid area by promoting, demonstrating and transferring technologies with zero carbon emissions, and by preserving and improving the ecosystem status and biodiversity of the Salt Mountain reserve, with the active involvement of local communities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

The Information Center is - at least during the summer days - supplied with energy from the panels - and the grantee (organization which is also the custodian of the Salt Canyon protected area) will maintain the installation. After the testing of the manual, in partnership with the loacl school Inspectorate, the manual will be included in other schools as well.

Notable Community Participation

The communities of Corund and Praid and the local public administrations of these localities and two NGOs are co-financing the project.

Replication of project activities

The construction of the photovoltaic panels by the volunteers, demonstrating that this can be done by everybody with a short preliminary instruction, had a huge impact on the local population. This activity was already replicated by 20 locals. Over 200 requests for training or for additional information were received by the grantee. The decision was taken to issue a mini guide, written in an accessible language for the use of the individuals wanting to produce their own panels.

Planning non gef grant

The further development of the Information Center was designed by the grantee and an application for financing from EU Structural Funds is under preparation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute ti the public awareness on the climate change issue and use of renewable energy sources.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to biodiversity conservation and climate change issues.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of using renewable energy sources.They will acquire the knowledge of manufacturing solar panels. The maintenance of the ecosystem status and biodiversity of the Salt Mountain reserve will increase the eco-tourism activity.

Gender Focus

Through project implementation it is put on accent on active participation of women, the number of women among the beneficiaries is exceeding 7000.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Volunteers and 105 pupils from the local schools are participating in solar panels construction, 25 locals are involved in the installment and promotion of the solar panels, 500 persons from the local community and 12500 visitors participate in information activities.

- 60 ha of globally significant biodiversity area (Salt Canyon reserve)
- 5 training sessions for the practical construction of panels with 100 trainees
- 1 information Center at the entrance of the Salt Canyon built and equipped
- 16 sq.m of photovoltaic panels, with a total power of 1.92 kW, built by volunteers and installed on the Center's roof
- 20 presentations in schools (18) and Universities (2) promoting the use of RES, delivered
- 1 manual on Biodiversity conservation and climate change issues developed and tested in two pilot schools.
- 13,000 persons (locals and tourists) benefited of the project result
