Demonstration of Eco-restoration and Eco-aquaculture in Mangrove Forest in the Beibu Gulf of Guangxi
Demonstration of Eco-restoration and Eco-aquaculture in Mangrove Forest in the Beibu Gulf of Guangxi
Main poblems:
To increase income, the local residents at mangrove area destroy mangrove for buidling shrimp pool which results in the reduction of mangrove area, the degradation of mangrove ecosystem. And also residual diets and chemical medicines of local aquaculture causes severe water pollution.

Project activities/solutions:
1.establish new type of eco-aquaculture system at destroyed mangrove tidal flat
2.technique training on eco-aquaculture, establish eco-aquaculture development system at Datao village
3.mangrove reforestation in three coastal cities: Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang .
4.support one local NGO at Qinzhou to get registered
5. conduct 12 environmetnal education classed and public outreach focuing on bird species of mangrove ecosystem and the production value of mangroves

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. about 2 ha. of new type of eco-aquaculture system demonstration site established, which will increase 40% of production value and 20000RMB per year per family comparing with the traditional aquauculture under the condition of same aquaculture area and same aquatic breeds;
2. sustainable mangrove management will be practiced at 6 ha. of coastal wetland
3. about 9000 mangrove trees are replanted in Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang and 600 people participated in reforestation
4. about 90 local people at mangrove area are tained including 50 women, new type of eco-aquaculture can be sustained
5. about 800 public and students in Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang have the knowledge of mangrove conservation and marine protection through training and environmental education

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building is one of the component of this project including technical trainings on eco-aquaculture.
Project sustainability
Firstly, in execution of the project of mangrove eco-restoration and ecofarming demonstration, the project has provided ecofarming facilities, knowledge, technologies and services to mangrove residents, and has achieved success in the mangrove ecofarming in which the economic outcomes can support the financial sustainability of mangrove ecofarming. Secondly, in the process of executing the project, the ecofarming system has been damaged by typhoon. However, the system?s ability of resistance to typhoon has been reinforced to the extent of resisting general storms without damage. Thirdly, the villagers who participate in the activities of mangrove eco-restoration and ecofarming demonstration have learned the necessary knowledge and technologies of ecofarming through training and practice, and are able to carry out mangrove ecofarming automatically. Finally, the establishment of the network between research institutes, project executor and mangrove residents ensures the timely upgrade of the technology of mangrove ecofarming.
