Galesti, a climate friendly commune

The overall objective of the project is to prevent climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through: energy efficiency improvement measures, the use of renewable energy sources at the level of the local community of Galesti commune and informing the local population and the population of Niraj micro-region (approx 30,000 people) regarding these measures.

Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

After the information session delivered by Focus Eco Center to the mayors from neighboring communes, the mayors decided to form an association "Valea Nirajului". This association developed a strategy on using energy efficient bulbs for public lighting in the area, using the SGP model. This strategy is currently under implementation in three more communes.

Project sustainability

The City Hall pf Galesti commune will secure the maintenance of the public lighting system, the community members will continue using the solar dryers and the biogas station will be functional for next 30 years, with adequate maintenance.The NGO (Focus Eco Center) will continue to support to the local community in multiplying the knowledge and experience gained within SGP and will also promote the valorisation of the local products. project.

Notable Community Participation

The communities from Galesti commune, Troita, Bedeni, Adrianu Mare, Adrianu Mic, Maiad, Sanvasii, the local public administration and one NGO is co-financing the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on climate change issues: reducing GHG emissions through implementing energy efficiency measures.

The local policy (decision of the Local Council) regarding the use of the renewable energy sources was influenced by the project

Planning non gef grant

The new created association "Valea Nirajului" (SGP grantee Focus Eco Center is part of) is preparing applications for financing under EU Structural Funds, in order to scale up all current project activity at the level of entire region.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to energy efficiency improvement measures (increasing the number of LED lightnings, installment of a water heating system trough solar panels, initiation of three bio-gas stations and mounting of three solar dryers)

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainability of livelihoods for the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of energy efficient measures and use of renewable energy sources. A distribution network for local products will be established generating additional income for the locals.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Three households are directly supported through the project, 200 community members benefit directly and use the GHG emission reducing technologies and approx. 30,000 inhabitants from Valea Nirajului region will participate in information activities.

Gender Focus

Women are collaborating in this project within the identification of local products. Through the capitalization of local products, women would benefit the most, the solar dryers also would be used mostly by women. At the fair for traditional products will participate 15 women, the solar dryers beneficiaries' will be 60, on training seminars 25, on informing seminars will participate at least 300 women.

Project Results

- the first commune in Romania having 80% of the public lighting with LED
- - 1 complex solar collector for water heating installed on the gym hall (used by over 800 youth, and 500 adults)
- 1 fair with traditional/local products organised, with 200 visitors and a permanent selling mechanism (based on order) established.
- 6 solar dyers for fruits and herbs manufactured by the locals and used for their commun benefit
- one big bio-gas station (to be used by three households) finalised
- 2 promotion events organised
- 10 press articles, 1 Radio interview with the project manager and 3 TV broadcasts
