The main aim of the project is creating a replicable model of sustainable management of grasslands for biodiversity conservation and increased economic value, and its implementation through training and involvement of communities and local authorities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

6000 locals will benefit from the information dissemination activities, 60 land owners will benefit directly from the sustainable reconstruction of grasslands, 30% of local Roma population will be implicated in grassland management activities and 30 pupils will benefit from educational activities

Replication of project activities

Even during the project implementation the sustainable management activities demonstrated in the model plot of grassland were replicated in two other communes: Sirnea (Brasov County) and Piatra Fantanele (Bistrita Nasaud County) faceing similar problems.

Policy Influence

One local policy - decision of the Local Council Sinca Noua, regarding the management of the degraded and abandoned lands was influenced.

Notable Community Participation

The communities of Sinca Noua commune and the local public administration of this commune, two NGOs, and three public institutions are co-financing the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of grasslands and hayfields.

Gender Focus

The participation of men and women will be equal during project implementation. Within the project from the management team (5 persons) 3 persons are women. Renaturopa Association promotes an active and visible policy of integrating gender mainstreaming in all programs and projects implemented , in order to conduct an analysis of their effects on women and men respectively, before decision making. This policy will be applied also through this project implementation.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, press releases, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to sustainable land management, especially grasslands and hayfields.

Project sustainability

The project partners (especially Renaturopa association and the Research and Development Institute for grasslands) will continue to provide assistance to the landowners for applying traditional, sustainable management measures on their meadows/pastures. The students trained will continue to be involved in practical activities focused on biodiversity conservation and the increase of value of the local hayfields.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood of the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of sustainable management of grasslands for the conservation of biodiversity and for increasing their economic value.

Project Results

- 6000 participants in project activities (out of which 2500 women and 2,000 youngs)
- two training sessions for community members, local public authorities and NGOs with 60 participants
- 18 teachers and over 400 students involved in information and education activities
- 30 ha of degraded grasslands restored
- traditional maintenance methods applied on 14 ha of pastures
- 80 cattle breeders benefited of specific support and were directly involved in restoration activities (out of which 30% rroma community)
- one practical Guide for sustainable management of grasslands developed, multiplied in 500 copies and distributed
- large promotion and dissemination of project results (2 events, 2 press conference, 2TV and 4 radio broadcasts, 8 articles in newspapers, discussion on 3 forums with over 6,000 users.
