Integrated Afforestation for Sustainable Livelihoods Project
The rate of deforestation,predominantly indegenous forests woodland and general degradation of natural resources has reached an alarming proportion in Mzimba district.According to baseline studies,communities in Bwengu extension planning area face a number of livelihood challenges which nclude soil degradation,low food production,deforestation,high cost of inputs and environmental shocks caused by climate change.It is also apparent that tobacco farming which is the major source of income in the district,shifting cultivation,demographic development and the rise of absolute poverty is the main contributing factor for this state of affairs.
Primary objective
-The main objective of this project is to rehabilitate,increase the sustainable use,conserve and manage the natural resources.
Implementation Strategy
-Community mobilization
-Awareness meeting and planning with communities
-Trainings for decentralisation,transformation,gender and advocacy
Key Project Outcomes
1.Capacity of communities to manage natural resources improved
2.Increased household food production and nutritionally improved diets
3.Improved conservation of water catchment areas and reduction of soil erosion
4.Reduced distance and frequency for women in fetching fuelwod
Sustainability
-The empowerment and involvement of the community at all stages of the project development shall bring project ownership.
-The trainings in seed collection and nursery establishment will have a long lasting impact even after the project phases out.
-Networkings will be expected to continue,sharing their resources and enhance participation in outreach during and after the project.
