Empowering Local Community to control Fire in Kurdistan Forests
Brief description of project:

Regarding increasing number of fires in Zagros Oak in villages near Sarvabad and Marivan forests which has been worse due to cross border migrating dust problem in west and south, this project aims to work on awareness rising and empowering both local men and women to protect Oak forests against fire and introduce techniques for sustainable exploitation of natural resources. Respecting religious and traditional believes of the different villages in the area, project team will seek advices and expertise of elderly people and experts to sensitize local people regarding value of surrounding natural resources and the ways to protect them. Local community will be empowered on forest degradation with emphasis on forest fires and how to help prevent fires. As women are traditionally involved in collecting wood and forest plants, corresponding advices will be provided by experts on sustainability of those activities. Children are also targeted to be sensitized through open area plays to learn the value and importance of the environment and climate effects of the forests.
