Semonkong Wetland Restoration and Conservation
Semonkong Wetland Restoration and Conservation
The targeted wetlands are in various stages of degradation and desiccation, resultant in reductions in the flow of ?Maletsunyane River. The degradation is caused by overgrazing, trampling, numerous footpaths and erection of water pipes, the encroachment of agricultural land and settlements and lack of adequate wetland vegetation cover resulting in high water velocities, which combined with the presence of numerous footpaths, contribute to erosion. The consequence is decreased infiltration which in turn exposes wetlands to greater risks from erosion. The impacts are (a) desiccation of the wetlands and (b) increased levels of sediment loss from the wetlands, and (c) low water table. The wetlands? proximity to the surrounding cultivated area also exposes them to risk of pollutants in the form of fertilizers and herbicides.

The project is aimed at restoring the hydrological functions of the wetlands using technical measures targeted at stabilizing erosion within and in the vicinity of the wetlands, improving the water holding capacity of the wetlands, reducing pollution within the wetlands and maintaining species (both fauna and flora) diversity of the wetlands using the following approaches: Awareness raising and capacity building to local stakeholders on issues related to sustainable land use practices, the socio-economic and environmental value of wetlands, ensuring effective and efficient project management through close co-ordination and integration between all stakeholders involved; and implementation of practical measures including restoration and rehabilitation of the degraded wetlands
