Katonga Wetlands Conservation Project
Community Eco-tourism project (interpretive canoe rides through one of Uganda?s extensive papyrus wetland systems). Promoting an intergrative management process for sustainable community development and biodiversity conservation. The project is managed by Katonga Wetlands Conservation Association a local CBO in the Central Western part of Uganda. The area has one of the richest collections of Wildlife such as the rare sitatunga, elephants and water-buck and various Bird species. The reserve is in a semi-arid area with a predominantly cattle keeping community.
Poaching, overgrazing, acaricide pollution, brick making and sustainable resource use amongst the communities threaten the wetland ecosystem. The GEF-focal area addressed is Biodiversity conservation and international waters through participatory community conservation. Activities include conservation education and community eco-tourism development as well as diversification of sources of income.
