ECO-SCHOOLS BAHAMAS: PROMOTING NATIVE PLANT BIODIVERSITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN SCHOOLS AND IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
This project will address native plant biodiversity conservation issues in schools and nearby communities on the islands of New Providence, Abaco and Eleuthera in The Bahamas. The project will focus on four issues: mainstreaming the concepts of sustainable development and plant biodiversity conservation into the educational system at the primary and secondary levels, increasing awareness in New Providence, Abaco and Eleuthera school communities on sustainable development with a focus on biodiversity conservation of native plants, promoting biodiversity conservation of native plants by reducing the quantity of invasive species on school campuses and promoting the planting of native species in New Providence, Abaco and Eleuthera, and building the capacity of teachers to effectively communicate ideas relating to sustainable development and its relationship to biodiversity conservation in The Bahamas.

This project will support and add momentum to ongoing initiatives in The Bahamas to address sustainable development issues. These initiatives include, National Coastal Awareness Month activities which addresses coastal threats including invasive species, native tree planting campaigns conducted by Government agencies and the new implemented national science curriculum which includes areas of study linked to sustainable development issues.
