Developing Community-Based Conservation Business to Support the Conservation of Medicinal Plants in Meru Betiri National Park, Jember District, East Java
GOAL
The strengthened community-based conservation to manage Meru Betiri National Park can reduce and even stop natural resources exploitation in Meru Betiri NP in addition to support the implementation of REDD+ in Meru Betiri National Park.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Conducting participatory planning to design applicative community-based business development model as the reference for forest farmer group to run the conservation business upon the rehabilitation result, both for forest or intercropping plants.
Indicator : 1. Existing result of market study regarding trading scheme of harvest products from the rehabilitation land as the reference for participatory planning to design applicative community-based business development model
2. Existing data of forest plants planted in the rehabilitation land by community from three villages as the basis data to run conservation business.
3. Existing community-based business development model design that can be applied in three villages.
Activities : 1. Market study regarding trading chain of the harvests produced from the rehabilitation land
2. Taking data on type of plants planted in rehabilitation land by community from three villages
3. Workshop to design applicative community-based business development model in three villages
Objective 2 : Strengthening the organization and capacity of forest farmer?s group as tool to implement the conservation business
Indicator : 1. Existing strong and skilled forest farmer?s group that can support community-based conservation business.
2. Increased capacities in managerial, marketing, and entrepreneurship in farmer?s group.
3. Increased knowledge among woman in the area regarding chemistry substances contained in the plants used for jamu (traditional drink).
4. Increased production capacity of 50% in one year.
5. Existing quality control mechanism of jamu
6. Existing high quality and marketable jamu Existing awareness of group members regarding intellectual property rights upon the produced jamu.
Activities : 1. Facilitating forest farmer group in sustainable manner
2. Conducting training on managerial, marketing, and entrepreneurship for all in charge in forest farmer?s group
3. Conducting training to identify chemistry substances contained in the plants used as the raw materials for traditional drink
4. Facilitating tools to produce medicinal plants for household purposes.
Objective 3 : Building collaboration with various stakeholders such as Trading and Industry Department, Agriculture Office, Banks, related stakeholders in market, etc.
Indicator : 1. Related parties will obtain valid information regarding conservation business potential in the rehabilitation land managed by community
2. Collaboration between forest farmer?s group and related stakeholders are build.
Activities : 1. Consultation with various stakeholders regarding business conservation development
2. Identifying the possibilities to collaborate with various stakeholders.
Objective 4 : Publishing and developing demonstration plot for conservation business practices by community and forest farmers in Meru Betiri National Park
Indicator : 1. The joint business units of farmers are strengthened and it can take the role to coordinate products harvested from rehabilitation land.
2. Existing village level organization to coordinate marketing in village level
3. Existing conservation business practices by farmer groups in three villages
4. Existing publication such as newsletter and press coverage regarding these activities done in Meru Betiri National Park.
Activities : 1. Establishing village-level organization
2. Establishing pilot for conservation business practices by experienced forest farmer?s group
3. Conducting training on revolving fund as the capital for conservation business
4. Releasing newsletters that consist of 100 bulletins covering the conservation activities, ecological trading, and other activities done in this programme
5. Press coverage that will involve journalists from Jawa Pos and Radar Jember newspaper. Therefore the activities can be published and read by wider public not only in Jember, but also in Banyuwangi, Lumajang, Situbondo, and Bondowoso.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Existing design for applicative community-based business development model as the reference for farmer?s group in developing ecological trading from the rehabilitation land in Meru Betiri National Park. The design is community participatory based and formulated based on market study and database of the entire types and number of plants planted by farmer in the rehabilitation land.
2. Increased capacities of forest farmer?s group in managerial, marketing, and entrepreneurship skills as the capital to implement conservation business.
3. Increased knowledge among woman in the area regarding chemistry substances contained in the plants used for jamu (traditional drink). In addition, the tool to produce medicinal plant for household, packaging, and labeling are available.
4. Existing collaboration with various stakeholders in Jember District Government ? such as Health Office, Trading and Industry Office, Micro, Small, and Medium Business Office ? and market implementer that can support the implementation conservation business practices.
5. Existing conservation business by selected advanced farmers group.
6. Existing plan to develop conservation fund of community gathered from the profit resulted from the ecological trading upon the product resulted from rehabilitated land.
7. Existing publication in newsletter, film, training manual, and press coverage upon the farmer?s activities and their activities in Meru Betiri National Park
Participants and/or Project Beneficiaries
Direct : 1. Community in Andongrejo, Curahnongko, and Sanenrejo Villages, Tempurejo sub-District. Expected beneficiaries 2030 households (Andongrejo: 670 households, Curahnongko: 520 households, and Sanenrejo: 840 KK).
2. 10 Local Jember District Government officers. They come from related instances with this programme, such as Industrial and Trading Office of Jember District.
3. 19 officers in Meru Betiri National Park.
4. 14 people in LSM Kail.
Indirect : 8 other villages in Meru Betiri National Park ; Central Forest Department ; University ; Public in general and not-for-profit organization in District, Province, and National Level.
