PROBICOU PROMOTING CHEMICAL SAFETY
This project is an effort to put in place a minimal programme to prevent ill health arising from exposure of endosulfan and Lindane which are listed by the Stockholm convention as persistent organic pollutants. In particular, the project will focus on women and children at work in rural agricultural setting . The project will cover two districts of Mbale and Bukedea districts in Eastern Uganda, because of their increased use of these POPs in rural agriculture. The project focuses on:-; building the capacity of local government leaders, the agricultural extension workers, and the general public for the dissemination of safety measures in use of pesticides; as well as building a comprehensive public awareness and education on the alternatives to endosulfan and Lindane. The key strategy is risk reduction, characterisation and management. Correspondingly, the main thrust of the effort is capacity building with a view to strengthen the management of POPs used in agriculture and ensuring safety of women and children that use them.
