MAFICO MABIRA ECOTOURISM PROJECT
The project will improve the conservation status of the Nahan?s francolin (bird) a key tourists attraction in Mabira, conserve significant medicinal trees cordia millenii, prunus africana and warbughia ugandensis (trees), promote tree planting in the forest and on farmland, promotes crafts and drama among the local people, provide employment directly and indirectly, increase visitor numbers and generate more revenue for future investment in conservation practices.
The project will employ a special tree planting activity using visitors/tourists to the camp site to plant trees in the demarcated / gazetted areas of the forest as they take walks. The trees will be raised in the nursery and tourists assisted by the guide to carry them, who then takes the GPS coordinates and the photographs.
Product Messages such as take a walk in Mabira forest, plant a tree, tracked by GPS points and photo coverage will be used as marketing slogans, to let the public know about the service presence.
The aim is to increase visitor numbers as well as revenue and make conservation self financing through ecotourism with minimal environmental impacts on the host environment.
Key project deliverables include, extension of the range habitat area for the Nahan?s francolin by 1000 hectares, established tree nursery to supply tree seedlings for planting by tourists, protected river Musamya banks through enrichment planting up to 10 kilometres long, ten thousand species of significant trees planted by tourists in the forest, accommodation units created and furnished to cater for big visitor groups and a developed marketing strategy for the camp site products
