Capacity building of local community through involvement of local population in nature protection activities and development of ecotourism

The main project idea is to maintain sustainable environment in the buffer zone of the Park through raising awareness and increasing capacity of local population in biodiversity conservation be developing environment friendly tourism, participatory inventory of flora and fauna, involving the local population in restoration of the Park's infrastructure, and participation of local population in the activities aimed at biodiversity conservation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

After the completion of financing from the GEF SGP side, the project will be followed up by the administration of park in cooperation with partners from international organizations as well as school pupils who were already involved into the project.

Capacity - Building Component

In the frame of the broad information campaign proposed in the project, there will be a workshop directed to the enhancing of ecological knowledge of park's staff as well as pupils from three schools. Different ecological contests will be organized for the pupils of younger courses etc., All these activities are carried out for the strengthening of capacity of local population including children.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

In the result of the project implementation on the territory of the Park it will be created green, tree-shrub summer pergolas, awnings with a green fence and bulrush coating for local tourists. Also local people can put their yurts and offer their services. Thus, the local population will get additional income from the provision of services in the form of cooking, the national drink (ayran, kumys, Zharma and so on) and sales of products from local natural materials (carpets, embroidery, patchwork articles and so on).

Notable Community Participation

The members of 24 families will participate in the realization of project by taking part in inventarization of local flora and fauna, in the construction and renovation of green awnings in the territory of National Park of Sarkent. It is also planned to involve local population in the age between 18-40 years (10 women and 14 men) as well as pupils from schools up to 30 children from three schools: Schools named of Boronbaev and Satarkulov and Primary school of Deino. They will assisst in collection of herbarium,observation of park and cleaning actions.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project is planning to design and produce the information board with details about the project's goal and objectives, its values and funding agency, and this will be established in the public place.

Policy Influence

The project is proposing to stregnthen the capacity of PArk's staff and that will enable them to develop a strategy plan of park as it is a newly adopted as a National Park the plan is very necessary.

Project Results

As a result of the project there will be following specific objectives reached:
- the staff of National Park will gain additional knowledge in the field of inventorying the living species of flora and fauna,
- the infrastructure of the park will be improved and the litter cans will be established inside the park. The system of utilization of garbage will be discussed and will be properly arranged.
- a photo exhibition will be carried out on biodiversity with participation of schools pupils from three schools and will be placed in the constructed green awnings.
- for the proper maintenance of vegetation, the irrigation system will be renovated and rebuild,
- information campaign will be carried out consisted of round table with representatives of local administration, park's staff, members of Jamaat, school representatives etc.,ecological contests and actions, cleaning actions and two presentations in the Rayon and Oblat level,
- the video documentary will be shot by the Jamaat members themselves, who will shot all the actions carries out in the frame of the project.
- the web site of the project will be elaborated and launched,
- information materials will be designed and published including leaflets with details for coming tourists about the Park's services and destinations. Additional leaflets promoting the ecological friendly attitude will be alsop developed and distributed.
