Securing livelihood strategies of semi-nomadic yak herders of Naro gewog through sustainable environment conservation and development activities.
Naro Geog under Thimphu Dzongkhag is one of the remote high altitude areas of Bhutan consisting of five villages with 56 households. The basic services are almost nil and the quality of life is poor. People are dependent only on yaks and other domestic animals. As in the other high altitude areas of Bhutan, there are signs of environmental degradation and deterioration. This is believed to be mainly caused due to unsustainable livestock rearing practices and due to encroachment by unpalatable species like scrub, rhododendrons, forbs, etc. The other factor could be excessive harvesting of fuel woods for cooking and heating purposes. Currently a majority of the yak herder families depend on either biomass fuel or fossil fuel like but fuel wood is the main source of their energy. Since yak rearing is their main livelihood and they spend their time on processing dairy products, the traditional processing method is time consuming and not efficient. There are about 10 streams and springs which serve as the water head for the Thimphu River. The government has supported in the construction of access wooden bridges but unfortunately in 2009 the flashflood destroyed them.
Therefore the project aims to make the rural livelihood strategies of the semi-nomadic yak herders of Naro Geog more sustainable and climate resilient by introducing improved rangeland management regime and appropriate technologies. It will reduce fuel wood consumption and positively contribute towards improving climate change and global warming. It shall improve diary processing technology and equipment would go a long way in improving both hygiene and quality of dairy products and generate income for the nomads. Construction of two wooden cantilever bridges will improve accessibility and free movement of yak herds.
