Policy Influence

In the project proposal, the people from the District Commissioner's office are highly involved in planning and management, as well as in the implementation phase.

Notable Community Participation

The communities were highly involved in the stakeholders meeting and engaging in development of the full project proposal.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The planning grant focused on developing the full project proposal of USD 48,000 SGP contribution together with the community, raising the awareness on waste management.

Replication of project activities

There are numerous similar communities challenged with the issue of waste management. Like in these three communities (Marienburg, Ellen en Zoelen), there is no central waste collection by the government, so the communities are more or less left with their waste, and they either burn part of it, or bury it, or dispose of it somewhere in the environment.

Policy Impact

This planning grant has been closely implemented with local policy makers from the district (with the district commissioner). The planning grant activities included stakeholder meetings to discuss the problem of waste management in the district of Commewijne, notably in the resorts of Alkmaar (Communities of Marienburg, Zoelen en Ellen).

Project Results

The planning grant has resulted in the following activities:

- Preparation, writing the project proposal for a full project proposal for SGP of USD 48,000. This included also organizing the community meetings, meetings with regional and national policy makers, to ensure community participation.

The purpose of the planning grant was to raise awareness among the community of Alkmaar that there was a change needed in the way the waste disposal of the community. Allthough there is a waste disposal service from the government, the community members still illegal dump waste, or throw away waste in the environment.

The project proposal was finalized in Jan 2013, and will be discussed with the NSC in Feb 2013.

The project proposal was approved by the NSC on 20 March 2013.
