This information campaign about the pilot launch of a recycling centre in Sofia and Dimitrovgrad is aimed at the initiation of a change in the public awareness and the stimulation of an active civil behavior regarding the utilization of packaging waste through a demonstration of the advantages of the latest world technology ? Recycling Centre. This information campaign has been designed to support the local administrations in the application of an alternative approach in the decision making process related to the separate waste collection and utilization of household waste as well as to enhance their efforts in overcoming the public indifference to the issue. The present campaign shall accentuate on an issue still not quite popular and discussed in Bulgaria, and that is the argument that waste can be a perfect resource for the industry, energy and urban construction. According to the 2020-year European Directives Bulgaria is to recycle 50 % of its paper, plastic, metal and glass

Main objective: Reduction of greenhouse gas emission (EPG) and improvement of the environmental education and awareness through a pilot demonstration of the launch of a Recycling Centre about the utilization of waste in Bulgaria.
Specific goals of the project: 1. Promotion and popularization of the latest world technology about separate waste collection in Bulgaria ? Recycling Centre ? of the Norwegian company ?TOMPA?. 2. Strengthening the level of public and media informity about the opportunities of improvement of the system of separate waste collection through recycling centres in Bulgaria. 3. Stimulation of responsible behavior towards separate waste collection and protection of the environment.
The 2009 ? 2013 National Waste-Collection Activities Program makes reference to waste management issues in Bulgaria by stating that there are: 1.) Ineffective separate waste collection of household packaging; 2.) Insufficient information to the population; 3.) Lack of motivation in the citizens about separate household waste collection.
This information campaign suggests the pilot application in Bulgaria of a well-developed and operating world practice ? a technology of utilization of packaging. The expectations are centered on the idea that the effective implementation of the project shall contribute to the long awaited change in the awareness of the population in this country, and shall also catalyze the process of protection and conservation of the environment through improvement and further development of the system of separate waste collection. The particular solutions to each of the issues identified by the campaign are as follows: 1.) Launch of a demonstration Recycling Centre about the utilization of waste, which is intended to strengthen the process of separate collection, sorting and extrusion of metal, plastic and glass waste. That is supposed to increase the interest in the latest world technology of waste recycling and lead to a motivation to multiply the same experience nationwide. 2.) Conduction of an information campaign about the potential opportunities and advantages of waste utilization and recycling. As a result good environment-friendly practices of proved efficiency throughout the world will be spread and supported. 3.) Stimulation of the citizens? motivation and responsible behavior about the utilization of the waste as an industrial resource (for example, reception of coins for the waste).
The implementation of this project is to achieve direct contribution to: reduction of the waste liable to subsequent treatment and recycling; reduction of the risk related to people?s health and environmental pollution; restriction of the generation of persistent organic pollutants after waste burning, achievement of an impact on the optimal ecologically-oriented waste collection, sorting, extrusion, transportation and submission of packaging waste; carrying out of the requirements identified by the national and European legislations in relation to waste management. - Hide
