Survey of the vulture population in Albania and awareness rising among local population on the beneficial role of these birds in the nature
Scavengers and carrion birds may not be pretty, but they play an extremely important role in any ecosystem. Scavenger birds eat carrion, thereby eliminating carcasses that could become breeding grounds for infectious diseases. The lack of vultures is something that should be at the forefront of conservation but all too often is hidden behind the public?s desire for the cute & cuddly.
The status, distribution and population are extremely contradictory in the western and eastern European range. While populations on the Iberian Peninsula doubled in size, those in the Eastern European/Mediterranean range slightly decreased with local extinctions in many parts.
This project will carry out a survey in the most likely areas in Albania as well as will prepare an action plan for the eventual protection and reintroduction of these birds
