Identification, registration, permanent matriculation of captive bears in Albania
Albania has signed international conventions such as the Bern and Bonn Convention. The Red Data Book of Albania lists bears as endangered species and fully protected species.
In Albania bears not only live in their natural habitat, but they also can be found often in dramatic circumstances in cages, small facilities in so called zoos or chained by their owners to dance for visitors in order to earn some money. Most of these captive bears come from nature, often as a ?by product? of hunting and poaching.
The main goal of this action is to prevent bear keepers to move/sell the bears. The identification is done by implanting a unique ID chip. With a reading device the number can be traced.
The project will tag about 50 bears and will create a data base for all of them. On the occasion of tagging, the animals will receive veterinary treatment as well.
