Protection of Gando ( Mugger )Crocodile in Chabahar Area through Education and Participation of Local Community and using Art for Conservation with the women of the Local Community as an entry point
Mugger crocodiles which are called Gando in local Baluchi language are listed in red IUCN list and categorized under vulnerable species. Based on international reports, most of the wild species of this crocodile have been completely vanished in the world; however, a small number (200 to 300) has been reported in Sistan and Baluchestan province. Security considerations in the habitat of Gando narrows the opportunity to identify the exact number and threats to the specie, however, drought and contamination of water resources which are the main habitat and resource for Gandos, are considered to be a serious threat. Need for more water has increased conflict between local people and crocodile as well. This project aims to raise public awareness regarding the specie and its importance and achieve a participatory solution to optimize irrigation systems and agriculture to protect Gando?s habitat and also using traditional handicraft through local women as Art for Conservation for generating alternative livelihood.

Main activities of the project include:
-Collect information about Gando and its habitat through interviews with local people.
-Conduct participatory workshops to identify the problems and threats.
-Awareness raising workshops to familiarize people with the specie and its importance.
-Linkage with local authorities through sessions and meetings with governmental stakeholders.
-Providing awareness raising classes in schools for students in different ages and grades
-Provide information to optimize irrigation techniques used by local farmers.
-Train local women the traditional handicrafts (focusing on Gando patterns) as Art for Conservation.
-Participation of local women at handicraft exhibitions and fairs.
-Linkage with other GEF SGP Art for Conservation Projects.
-Design and install informative posts and signs in and neighboring to Gando habitat.
