REDUCTION OF FOREST DEGRADATION IN MARIVAN, ZAGROS OAK FOREST THROUGH TRAINING OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Main occupation of about 30,000 residents in Marivan Township villages (agriculture and livestock breeding) depends on the natural resources including forest and rangeland. Poor economic situation in the area accelerated the pace of exploitation and consequently destruction of the forests and rangelands in the region. In addition 123,000 ha of Oak forests and 97,000 ha of rangelands have been seriously damaged by fires. Number of fires has notably increased during the past years; reports indicate 187 fires in 2009 (regardless of area affected by the fire) have been raised to 890 fires in 2010. In addition airborne dust particles have worsened the situation over the recent years. Over 35,000 ha of forest burnt in the area in 2010. This project aims to reduce number and area of fires through attracting local people participation in fire distinguishing activities as well as revitalizing the burnt area by planting new trees.
To achieve above mentioned goals, project team planned to:
-Organize fire watch teams of local residents to put off fires as early as possible
-Empower fire watch team with appropriate training and equipment to fight against fires
-Identify destroyed areas to be revitalized by planting local species of trees
-Identify and provide local species which can cover burnt areas
-Motivate local people to take active part in rehabilitation process and safeguard the rehabilitated area
-Encourage women and youth to actively participate in rehabilitation activities
-Attract cooperation of local authorities to support rehabilitation activities
-Safeguard rehabilitated area for two years through participation of local community to make sure planted trees are strong enough to survive
