Reduce application of chemical pesticides in 600 ha agriculture lands through increase local production of Beneficial Insects - Lacewings and distribution among local farmers and landusers
The objective of the Project is to improve the ecological condition of 600 hectares of agricultural lands in Vose rayon of Khatlon oblast, Republic of Tajikistan, through decreasing pesticide pressure on agricultural lands and using, during 12 months, beneficial insects such as lacewings (Chrysopidae), Trichogramma, Habrobracon hebetor Say.
Project tasks are the following:
To achieve the objective set, the following tasks are planned:
1. Coordinate efforts of organizations concerned (Committee for Environmental Protection, Agriculture Department, Land Committee, Dekhkan Farms Association, rural jamoats, Mass Media) to improve the ecological condition of agricultural lands.
2. Strengthen, under Durandesh PA, material capacity of the biological factory for growing and producing beneficial insects such as lacewings (Chrysopidae), Trichogramma, Habrobracon hebetor Say.
3. Conduct for dekhkan farms and other land users a cycle of education trainings on the role of entomophages, such as lacewings (Chrysopidae), Trichogramma, Habrobracon hebetor Say, in recovery of the ecological balance and techniques of their use.
4. Release and disseminate information materials on the role of entomophages, such as lacewings (Chrysopidae), Trichogramma, Habrobracon hebetor Say, and their use.
5. Prepare and broadcast 4 TV programmes on entomophages, such as lacewings (Chrysopidae), Trichogramma, Habrobracon hebetor Say, and their role in improving the ecological condition of agricultural lands.

Project Characteristics and Results
Project sustainability
When Project financing from SGP/GEF ends, its sustainability will be supported as follows:
1. After the Project ends, the factory for growing and producing beneficial insects will sell its products on the market and use the proceeds to continue its activities.
2. Dekhkan farms will use 1-2% of their total annual income to purchase and use entomophages in their farms and on their household plots.
3. Local population of the target rayon and adjacent rayons of the region will purchase entomophages and use them on their household plots and in their dekhkan farms to increase soil fertility and protect lands against degradation and erosion. This will spur extension of positive experience of beneficial insects use to neighboring rayons.
4. A contract will be signed with the Oblast Agriculture Department on growing and production of beneficial insects and supply of dekhkan farms of the region with good-quality products.
5. Staff of the organization will elaborate project proposals to be submitted to donor organizations for grants.
