Community-based Coastal Zone Management
Community-based Coastal Zone Management
GOAL
expected to play the roles in the conservation of coastal ecosystems in Purwodadi village by community participation and in strengthening community to manage environment in a sustainable manner as well as in strengthening local economy in order to minimize natural destruction by the community and minimize outside investors coming in.

OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Dissemination of Ulva (a kind of green algae)-harvesting techniques in a sustainable manner
Indicator : People understand the function of Ulva in the environment and can harvest it appropriately without damaging the environment
Activity : Will be carried out in the beginning of the program, to provide information regarding the introduction and the function of Ulva in the environment and the correct harvesting techniques without damaging the environment. The technique used is the sharing and discussion (instead of one-way lecture). Implemented in the village hall, followed by people who are members of organized groups such as fishermen group, farmers? association (gapoktan), tourism awareness group ( pokdarwis), breeders group, catfish culture groups, and others, especially ones that related directly to coastal and Ulva. The materials will be provided from the academics, hopefully from University of Gajah Mada that is more trusted by the people in Purwodadi village (Discussion will be attempted to focus on efforts of Ulva cultivation).
Objective 2 : Ulva Cultivation in Nglambor Coast
Indicator : Nglambor as the place for Ulva cultivation and the seedlings later can be distributed to other beaches in order to support Ulva conservation
Activity : Will be carried out as a follow-up from the discussions held previously. Activities are carried out by coordinated coastal communities in coastal communities (traders, fishermen, tourism group) with PPA-GK and the academia. Several things that will be implemented, among others are, media creation, seeds collection, transplantations, cultivation, distribution. The time to do the whole process is 25 days and control is carried out weekly (implemented by community groups)
Objectives 3 : Waste management in Siung beach
Indicator : People can manage their waste with the principle of reduced-reuse-recycle and the results can support their daily lives
Activity : This is a side program that will be implemented by the public because it is their own idea. The activities will cover provision of waste bins, provision of final disposal sites and waste management. It will takes 40 days approximately, followed by waste management training for the people in the village hall, facilitated by relevant NGOs (possibly from the Kanopi Indonesia Foundation).
Objective 4 : Development of alternative livelihoods for Ulva harvesters
Indicator : Jati Makmur Farmer groups can be the facilitator for community agricultural business because they already practice that and their crops can give economic benefit thus able to reduce sea grass harvest and can strengthen local economy.
Activity : Having Jati Makmur farmers? group as facilitators for people who want to have alternative business in agriculture. Several things that implemented among others are, making a demonstration plot, nursery and providing seed, providing discussion facility, and training on marketing at the village hall by related party (it is attempted to have the resource person from Business Association of Indonesia). Besides, we will also try to explore other community groups such as tourism awareness groups, fishermen communities and others. It might take 1.5 months (45 days).
Objective 5 : Implementation of appropriate technology
Indicator : Residents can apply appropriate technology to support their livelihood and are able to manage it
Activity : Activities carried out by people in Jati Makmur Farmers? Group and Group of Coastal Communities are poducing organic fertilizers and making hydram. Fertilizer production will be carried out in the area of Jati Makmur Farmers? Group while hydram will be made in Mudal/Mendolo to meet the needs of coastal communities. It will takes 30 days and the process will be implemented simultaneously to save the time because each sub-program is run by different community groups.
Objective 6 : Strengthening of farmer groups, development of media and community?s communication networks
Indicator : Making Jati Makmur Farmers Group as center of information and community network thus the management can goes on even though the project has completed
Activity : After the whole process, strengthening activities will be conducted in the last month (30 days). Some of the activities that are going to carried out cover; reorganizing the system of Farmers Group, reviving the regular discussion, training on Organization and Management, preparing the youth, and comparative study to other farmers group (hopefully Turgo farmers' groups). In addition to farmers, strengthening will also be implemented in other communities such as in Pokdarwis, fishermen groups and if possible, reaching traders? association

EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Learning process for the community and members of the PPA-GK in the process of making proposals (submitted for the funding).
2. Planning Grant is expected to be a learning process for the next proposal, thus the proposal is more prepared and acceptable.
3. Cultivation of Ulva to support Ulva conservation which is currently in critical condition as a result of excessive harvesting.
4. Community is able to manage coastal region appropriately and effectively especially in term of coastal resources extraction and waste management.
5. Community does not depend on coastal resources and can be independent through their own business.
6. Community has a stronger economy thus is not easily tempted by the presence of developers and investors.
7. Community is able to utilize appropriate technologies and to manage them.
8. Community and farmer groups can proceed the project independently after the end of project (thus sustainable).

Participants and/or Project Beneficiaries
Direct : Farmers in the area of Purwodadi village who have been working on the lands around the southern coast of Gunungkidul especially members of Jati Makmur Farmers Group. There are about 300 households with 200 households working on the field and farmers of local cattle in the area of the southern coast. Moreover, Ulva harvesters and managers of Ulva chips can also enjoy the results without being worry of Ulva extinction. They can also participated directly in Ulva conservation through vegetative propagation (asexual).
Indirect : Most people in Tepus District and surrounding areas if they follow the footsteps of the success of community in Purwodadi village. For government agencies, the achievement of this project will assist stability and establishement of the region thus ease the management and supervision of Gunungkidul southern coastal region by the locals. It will also support ecotourism planned by the Department of Tourism of Gunungkidul.
