Revitalization of Traditional Agroforestry Fruits Farmers
Revitalization of Traditional Agroforestry Fruits Farmers
GOAL
A grand design of traditional, fruits producing agroforestry systems that are productive & sustainable is developed. The design of the system to be constructed include revenues increment of fruit growers, conservation of agro-forestry in order to be able to maintain its function in water & soil protection as well as carbon storage thus can play a role in addressing climate change.

OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : The participation of farmers? community in managing a more productive & sustainable traditional fruit-producing agroforestry accompanied by an awareness to implement the protection of soil, water & carbon storage is increased.
Indicators: : 1. The skill & ability of the farmers in developing planning activities for the implementation of traditional, productive & sustainable agroforestry in their dusung is increased.
2. The skill & the ability of the farmers in technical implementation of cultivation & in maintenance of fruit trees & poultry are increased.
3. The awareness of farmers? community to continue tending their land & harvest only the fruits without logging the timber is increased thus the vegetation cover on their dusung is maintained.
Activities : There are two types of activities for the development of agroforestry systems grand design:
a. Mapping of field & activities in preparation of the grand design
- Carry out dusung surveys & participatory mapping together with farmers? community. The survey is conducted to map the boundaries of dusung area using ground measurement equipment & then carry out an inventory of trees in dusung & the position of each tree including the presence of rivers, springs, steep areas, etc. The entire dusung area will be divided into lanes, 20 m in width & a survey team will explore all of the paths & keep track of all existing trees on the paths including the position & record the data on tally sheet. Furthermore all data is stored in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software. All activities are carried out by KP3IM, students & farmers? community in dusung area within 2 weeks in the first month.
- Carry out social surveys of farmers? community. This survey was conducted through the preparation of questionnaires & in depth interview to dusung landowners by KP3IM & the students. All of these activities will also be conducted by KP3IM, students & farmers? community in dusung area within 2 weeks in the first month.
Thus mapping of field & activities will be completed within a month in the first month.
b. Training to farmers? community via ?on the job training? & with ?learning by doing? principle.
Implementation of trainings for farmers? community that are going to be carried out is covering: (1) Way of providing good seeds of fruit, (2) Way of enriching fruit crops, fertilizing, weeding, pruning branches and, (3) Method of pineapple cultivation, (4) Ways of making cattle sheds & poultry farming, & (5) Training of making a grand design in a participatory manner. Details of the implementation materials of training are as follows:
1. Way of providing seeds of fruit from grafting thus they are more quickly in producing fruit (to make selection of fruit seedlings in breeder of fruit trees grafting, to remove seedlings from the breeder of fruit trees to some temporary nursery near the site of enrichment, to choose the location of temporary nursery where sources of water for watering is near & to enable the seedlings to adapt to the local environment when they are planted in the dusung later). Training of fruit seedlings selection will be carried out at the seed breeder in Telaga Kodok Village by KP3IM together with farmers? community, temporary nursery site selection is in dusung location near the springs of Hative Besar Village, seeds transportation from the breeder to the temporary location of planting/enrichment site is carried out by KP3IM. All activities will be implemented in the second & third months.
2. The implementation on way of enriching fruit crops, fertilizing, weeding & pruning branches (- Plants enrichment is done by planting the seedlings from the selected ones & they will be planted in between the existing fruit trees on dusung area by taking into account the empty locations or the appropriate distance of planting to avoid competition between the growth of existing fruit trees & the enrichment ones; - Fertilizing plants is carried out by providing fertilizer for fruit trees with high rate of growth. This kind of growth usually happens in times of seedling & sapling & concurrently with the enrichment plant. During fertilization, weeding will be done if shrubs are disturbing the plants that are going to be fertilized. Tilling the soil around the main trunk is also done. Fertilizers being used are organic ones; - Weeding is done by cutting the plant or plant pests, including clearing the grass or shrub with a radius of 1.5 to 2 m from the main plant in poles & trees stages. If dry or unproductive branches/twigs are found, then they will be trimmed). Training of fruit crops enrichment will be carried out in dusung area, Hative Besar village by KP3IM, students & the farmers? community, fertilizing, trimming & weeding in dusung area will be carried out by KP3IM, students & farmers? community in Hative Besar Village. All activities will be implemented in the third & fourth months.
3. Seedbed preparation & ways of pineapple planting. In sloping areas, 8 units of seedbeds measuring 1m x 17 m ready to be planted with pineapple are prepared. Beds are equipped by mulching plastic to suppress weeds, to conserve soil moisture & avoid fertilizer to be washed out. Training of seedbed & plastic cover/mulching preparation will be implemented in dusung area in Hative Besar village by students & farmers? community, while the pineapple planting is carried out in beds that have been prepared before & carried out by KP3IM, students & farmers? community. All of these activities will be implemented in the fourth & fifth months.
4. Ways of making sheds & poultry farming. The training will start by making permanent sheds (for chickens & ducks) in 5m x2m x2m measurement, consisting of 10 chicken & 10 duck with one year feed. Training on this shed construction will be carried out in the area of farmers? house by KP3IM, students & farmers? community while poultry procurement will be carried out by students in the poultry market, as well as the procurement of feed in Farmers? store. All activities will be implemented in the fifth months.
5. Training in making a participatory grand design. Training will be for farmers? community & youth organizations around dusung, students will be involved in the revitalization program of dusung. The event will be held in order to build capacity. Planning of training will be carried out at people?s house that has a large room or at the Village Hall of Hative Besar, facilitated by KP3IM in cooperation with the extension team from Ambon Forest Service. The training of making the grand design will be done after all databases are available and, therefore, the training will be held on the end of this program. Right after the mapping of activities & training are well completed. In connection with that, this training will be held for 5 effective days on the first week of the sixth month.

EXPECTED RESULTS
1. The availability of a complete & accurate baseline data on farmers? socioeconomic including the potential of their dusung area.
2. The formulation of a grand design system of a traditional, fruits-producing agroforestry that is productive & sustainable.
3. The realization of good cooperation among farmers? community, KP3IM & students of Pattimura University as well as the Forest Agency of Ambon.
4. Ability to follow up the planning grant facility from the GEF-SGP Indonesia (after the formulation of the grand design) with the implementation of it through the support of the full grant facility from the GEF-SGP Indonesia.
