Objective 2 Coral reefs at 5 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the coastal of Hoga island are rehabilitated
Indicator : Coral reefs at 5 MPAs are rehabilitated through coral transplantation techniques
Activities : Coral transplantation on this project will be carried out in five MPAs that have been damages known from reef checking. Transplantation is technically divided into three stages:
a. Reef chek and area plotting
b. Material (substrate) of coral transplantation procurement
c. Coral transplantation
The last activity in this series is monitoring and supervision of coral transplantation or post-transplant maintenance. This is especially important for the success of transplantation process. To support this, the project needs to provide 10 sets of diving equipments and one compressor as tools being used for transplantation. The activity will be held by target groups and rural communities that previously had been given training on diving skill and coral transplantation techniques and will be guided by a technical team from the implementing institution.
Objective 3 Community can take advantage of alternative energy sources through the construction of 25 unit of sollar panel kitchen
Indicator : Members of target group and rural community target no longer use mangrove for firewood
Activities : Construction of 50 units of Solar Panel Kitchen
Mangrove forest is the place to live and breed for various marine species. Currently the maintenance of mangrove forest is neglected due to its exploitation to meeting community needs. Government and community efforts to rehabilitate mangrove forests seem to be in vain because people are still very dependent on the use of this plant as their energy source for daily needs. Destruction of mangrove forests indirectly gives negative impact on the sustainability of other marine lives such as fish and coral reefs.
Through this activity, the people of Samabahari (Bajo Sampela) Village who mostly still use mangroves as firewood for their daily needs will be able to utilize alternative energy source as substitute for firewood. The construction of 50 units of solar panel kitchen as alternative energy is intended so that people will no longer use mangrove as firewood.
Avoiding the use of mangroves as firewood for the family needs through increasing awareness, is not enough, other alternative energy is needed to be able to replace community habits in the use of mangrove. In this activity, together both the target groups and community will produce solar panel kitchen, technically guided by the technical team that has been formed.
Objective 4 : Community is able to catch fish by using environmentally friendly fishing gear
Indicator : Community is no longer using fishing gear that is not environmentally friendly such as fish bomb and cyanide to catch fish
Activities : Fishing using gear that is not environmentally friendly or is often known as illegal fishing is the most dominant factor contributing positively to the damage of coral reefs in the sea area of Hoga Island. There have been many efforts to suppress the occurrence of illegal fishing. Community awareness is also not very effective in reducing the practice because there is no providence of alternative way of catching fish. Besides the pressure of family need and the lacking of supervision by related officials also encourage the bad practices.
The provision of 5 units of floating fish cages and 20 sets of fishing net is expected to became an alternative of fishing gear for people that will not reduce the amount of the catch over the years. The provision of those fishing gears will be used by the target group who have been trained in the environmentally friendly fisheries.
Objective 5 Increasing community income through the management of cultural tour packages
Indicator : Existing management group of Bajo Sampela cultural tour package
Activities : Dependence to marine has made the people of Bajo Sampela continue to exploit the nature and even practice in a manner that causes the destruction of the environment. Nature conservation is neglected due to economic necessity and is also driven by the lack of knowledge and skills of the people to manage natural resources in a sustainable and effective manner.
The skills and thinking pattern in using natural resource of Sampela Bajo people needs to be improved. Great potential they have been possessing need to be reviewed and organized for a more economically valuable and environmentally sound utilization. Many tourists come to visit this village, but the community has not optimally use their coming as a chance to get additional family income. The subjects of houses? revitalization as home stay place are the houses belong to the tourism family group who have obtained the knowledge and skills in managing tour package.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Coral reef of Hoga island can be maintained as the place of various types of fish to live.
2. Community is able to maintain and rehabilitate damaged reefs in a participatory manner.
3. Community recognizes the importance of conserving coral reeefs of Hoga Island by not exploiting them.
4. Community can be aware and involved to keep the clarity of sea water by not throwing garbage carelessly and always keep the beaches clean of trash.
5. Community can use alternative energy to reduce pressure of mangrove exploitation for firewood.
6. Community is able to recognize and utilize the potential of their area as something with economic value.
7. Communities get alternative income from the tourists coming to Hoga island for a
village cultural tour packages.
8. Samabahari (Bajo sampela) Village becomes a sample of Best Practice in managing natural resources-based ecotourism.
