First steps in cheetah rehabilitation/reintroduction in Uzbekistan
First steps in cheetah rehabilitation/reintroduction in Uzbekistan
The project aims to start reintroduction activities of one mammal species that was previously inhabiting Uzbekistan and then went extinct - cheetah (IUCN Red-listed as Vulnerable, and Red List of Uzbekistan as Extinct). In the past cheetah's habitat was all Kyzylkum desert and Ustyurt Plateau. In Kyzylkum cheetah was eradicated in 19th century. In Ustyurt Plateau cheetah was last seen in 1973.

This project aims to start reintroduction of cheetah in Uzbekistan. Whereas the project will not be able to resolve the main problem - undermining of the food chain for cheetah, it will make steps for ensuring reintroduction of cheetah in future.

The project will do the following:

1. A new adaptation center for cheetah will be built on the territory of ecocenter Djeyran
2. Receiving 4 cheetahs through WWF for further work
3. Development of the scientifically backed up programme on adaptation of cheetahs to local conditions and teaching them hunting skills
4. Long term rehabilitation of the food chain for cheetah (gazelles, rodents, birds, etc) on the territory of the ecocenter
5. Environmental awareness raising programme for preservation of rare species, including of cheetah.
