ECO-SCHOOLS BAHAMAS: PROMOTING NATIVE PLANT BIODIVERSITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN SCHOOLS AND IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
The project focuses on promoting the conservation and sustainable use
of native plant biodiversity on school campuses and in nearby communities that will become a
core component of the Eco-Schools Bahamas programme moving forward. Project objectives
include:
? Mainstreaming the concepts of sustainable development and plant biodiversity
conservation into the primary and secondary curricula of the Bahamian educational
system;
? Increasing awareness of sustainable development and native plant biodiversity on the
islands of Abaco, Eleuthera and New Providence;
? Promoting native plant biodiversity conservation by reducing the quantity of invasive
alien species (IAS) on school campuses and by encouraging the planting of native species
in schools and local communities on the islands of Abaco, Eleuthera and New
Providence; and
? Building the capacity of teachers to effectively communicate ideas related to sustainable
development and biodiversity.
