Support of local initiatives for sustainable conservation of Important Bird Areas (IBAs)
Project aim:
Common development and implementation of local action plans on conservation and sustainable use of IBA?s biodiversity (on 3-5 IBA)
Project tasks:
- Organisation and holding contest of micro-projects on decreasing threats to IBA with participation all interested parties on local level
- Common development and implementation of local management plans for 3-5 IBAs
- Information-methodical support for management plans realization and development of recommendations on regulation of monitoring and protection of IBAs under Kazakhstan legislation
Project results:
- On contest results defined 3-5 pilot IBAs for implementation activities on decreasing existing and potential threats to IBAs? biodiversity
- Seminar aimed to detail development of the micro-projects on pilot IBAs held in every settlement (of pilot IBAs). As a seminar results developed 3-5 local management plans of pilot IBAs. Under the plans each pilot IBA got funds for implementation activities on decreasing threats to pilot IBAs
- Developed informational materials as well as instruments for IBAs common management by all interested parties, matched a mechanism of knowledge and experience exchange. By results of overall realized activities there are recommendations developed on additions into Kazakhstan legislation concerning management of IBAs, including wetlands of Kazakhstan

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
All project activities, including contest, are based on principles of gender balance and equality. While developing micro-projects, social-economic interests of women take into account and women initiatives get support. In all project activities women participate on equal base with men.
Policy Impact
IBAs? local management and development plans are a part of global initiative on wetlands and IBAs saving. Project experience helps to correct state policy of wetlands, IBAs conservation, stimulate local initiatives development.
