FARMING AS A SOURCE OF INCOME AND REDUCTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN ORDER TO INCREASE HOULSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY AND CONSERVATION OF ENVIRONMENT;
Context
TWENDE MBELE women group comprise of members from Machame in FOO village with intention of improving vegetable farming for the purpose of improving their income. Currently the group is producing vegetables in a 1 hectare land out of 10 hector land of which in the one hectare they can earn 100,000TSH per year. The group is intending to improve their income by producing vegetables in a way which will give them more money. The group is intending to produce variety of vegetables including garlic, broccoli, salad and red cabbage. The group is also planning to establish tree nursery and will organize environmental conservation activities to primary schools in the village.

Project General Objective
Increase food security for poverty reduction and environmental conservation.

Specific objectives
1. Increase food production especially vegetable which can reduce poverty due to its high prices
2. To conserve the environment close to the Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park through intensive vegetable cultivation to reduce extensive cultivation

Project activities
1. To build water reservoir tank
2. Installing vegetable shade
3. Establish vegetable nursery.
4. Preparation of the land 10 acres
5. To establish nursery tree
6. Create relationship with the schools and to the community around to participate in the project by planting trees.

Project benefits
1. The project will contribute to increase of food availability in the village
2. Peoples health will be improved through accessibility of affordable and nutrition food crops
3. The project will contribute to create employment opportunities.
4. The project will help in the conservation of the environment
5. Communities in the Foo- village will learn cultivation of variety of vegetables.

Project output
1. One water tank will be built
2. One Vegetable shade will be erected
3. 7. 5 tons of garlic will be produced every 6 month in (2 acres)
4. 20 bags onions will be produced every 6 month in (2 acreas)
5. Other 530,000 kg of mixed vegetables will be produced (plant three times a year)
6. 20,000 indigenous trees will be planted
7. Around 50 laborers will be hired
8. 1,500 students will get knowledge of environment conservation through taking care of the nursery trees and planting trees.
9. Peoples income level will increase.

Group contribution
? The group has access to 10 acres of land, which belong to members.
? Clearing and preparation of the land
? The group will purchase the seeds for the vegetables.
? They will pay salary of two staffs which will be employed permanently and other casual labors

Sustainability of the project
1. The project will sell the crops at reasonable prices to the community?s which the money will be reinvested to the project
3. The group will start a special fund for the maintenance of the irrigation through membership fee and some funds will be set aside from the profit which will be realized.
4. Extra trees will be sold to the communities outside the Foo- village.

Follow up mechanism
1. Employed staffs will ensure the daily duties are performed, the group will be visited by the village authority as well as COMPACT for monitoring. The project will prepare Quarterly meeting which will be held by the managing committee to see the progress. Monthly& Quarter financial and narrative reports will be produce by the employees & group members to COMPACT office. Group members will hold meetings according to the constitution to see the progress followed by a year auditing process.
