Strengthening the Adaptive Capacity of Farmers through the Construction of a Water Harvesting System
Strengthening the Adaptive Capacity of Farmers through the Construction of a Water Harvesting System
Drought period for the past 20 years has gotten increasingly longer which has brought us to this point today where we experience approximately 8 months of drought. This change is also evident in an increase in our overall temperature. These climate changes are a direct result of deforestation for the purpose of bauxite mining. The project seeks to: develop sustainable water harvesting system, build awareness about the productive use of rainwater harvesting and increase the community?s capacity to apply adaptive management tools in Sustainable Land Management.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The Security and Upliftment Association of Dawkins and Surrounding Districts (SUADSD) was formed on February 1st 2009. The Association is registered with the Social Development Commission, with the aim to promote the Safety, Security, Upliftment and Beautification of the community. The Community was motivated to form this Association to promote and foster growth and improve the quality of life for all its residents and visitors. In order to achieve our stated goals the Association agreed to focus on the following priorities for development: ? Running Water to every household ? Streetlights ? Better Roads ? Organised activities for the youth including sports and education ? Outreach assistance for the elderly and indigent ? Functional Community Centre ? Clean Road Banks, Drains and Roadways ? Sanitary, modern toilets at the Mocho Primary and Infant School ? Enhancement by Beautification
Notable Community Participation
The availability of water all year round will enable the farmers to be productive for twelve months instead of four months. This would ensure a steady income throughout the year thereby enabling the farmers to maintain a good standard of living and a healthy lifestyle. It is a farming community located in North Central Clarendon. The population of Dawkins is 1,300 but this reservoir will service only 15 households. The average size of each household is 4 persons which consist of one male, one female and two school age children. The planting of fruit trees will allow some diversification of income and it will also increase rainfall to the area. The Community awareness of Climate change, risks and impacts will be increased through a number of Community meetings conducted by Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Rural Agricultural Development Agency and Social Development Commission. The Community members will be engaged from the start by attending meetings and then when the installation has started by providing labour. When the installation has been completed they will be responsible for monitoring the reservoir and ensuring that no damage is done to either the water lines or the solar panels. They will also be responsible for maintaining the water catchment area.
