APOIO A PRODUÇÃO DE SAL SOLAR- Conhecimento e Inovação
APOIO A PRODUÇÃO DE SAL SOLAR- Conhecimento e Inovação
Project duration and period: 14 months ? July 2012 to August de 2013

Partners: UICN, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Associação de mulheres produtoras de Sal-Amprosal

Project specific objectives:
(i) Introduction of the technique ?solar salt extraction?
(ii) Promote the viability and sustainability of the project;
(iii) Disclose the new technique and to promote it in other associations producing salt.
(iv) Training in small business management to increase women's economic output.

Project results:
(i) 40 women (Amprosal) formed in techniques of solar salt extraction;
(ii) 40 women (Amprosal) are using the techniques of salt extraction of firewood solar;
(iii) Spent of fuel is zero in the salt production;
(iv) Salt producers are saving at least 30% of their time with this technique;
(v) In each week a woman produces 25kg of salt;
(vi) 40 women (Amprosal) started their business and repay micro-credit received

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
In this area of the country (like in the rest of the contry), mostly rural activities is supported by women. These are those who demonstrate a higher level of production at the activities were they are engaged in. They are those that support the entire family. The introduction of this method in the activity of salt production, will relieve the workload as they will see the time and physical effort spared significantly (more than 50% of time saved and reduced to zero the effort demand for firewood).
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The beds are constructed by women and do not require financial costs unlike the traditional practice (for cooking the water to obtain salt). The salt extraction using solar energy will not require use of firewood, saving time to women in the search of it . Additionally it will be created a cash credit for women to invest in small businesses.
