to Climate Change Mitigation Initiative in OPT; towards a Sustainable Charcoal Production in Jenin Governorate.

This pilot project aims at testing the introduction of the ?Adam Retort? technology / Improved Charcoal Production System (ICPS) for ?Yabad? charcoal production in Jenin. Introducing this new technology will make charcoal production less harmful to the producers themselves as well as to the nearby residents, more environmentally friendly (less greenhouse gas emissions) and more viable in an economic sense. In parallel to introducing the ICPS, an Environmental Impact Assessment of the new technology will be made as well as a comparison between the effects of the old and the new type of production. The new and more efficient Adam retort technology is expected to better respond to an existing regional demand for the coal and improve income and employment locally.

Capacity - Building Component

6) Capacity building for the new Environmental Friendly charcoal Society employees and other CBOs? in the area on project cycle, Climate change and other environmental issues

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

7) Prepare 1000 copy from a manual on all the project activities including the retort design, and how it affects the Climate Change for the community. 8) Conduct a final workshop and celebrate the EWD for year 2013.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Due to the high quality of Yabad coal, a regional market has developed across the Palestinian-Israeli border. Some 1,000 households in West Jenin (about 25 percent of residents) depend at least partly on coal production. As such this project will make these livelihoods more sustainable. Moreover, air pollution from charcoal production affects the community in other ways. Once academic study found through interviews with residents that the current methods of production, which require burning each quantity of wood for three weeks,pollute the air to the extent that olive oil and olives, another major source of local revenue, take on the flavour of smoke.

Replication of project activities

Once the technique is evaluated and proven suitable, local producers in 11 area villages will be trained in using the technology and a manual published describing its use. the project could ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissionsby hundreds of tons annually and create a cleaner, healthier way of life for charcoal producers and their families.

Policy Impact

The project was received with great interest by local governmental and non-governmental organizations. evident in the participation of stakeholders (such as the Ministry of Planning and Administrative Development, Ministry of Environment Affairs, the Jenin Governor's office, the Yabad Municipality, the Environmental Friendly charcoal Society and the Ministry of local Government) in the project's steering committee.

Project sustainability

The project's broad community participation and the fact that the new technology has been tried and tested will support sustainability.

Project Results

Construction of the first piloted charcoal production unit using the modified Adam retorte to fit into local context under the direct supervision of its founder Mr. Johnn Christoph Adam, a local consultant, and project engineer to flollow up with the modified design and field implementation. The original design was modified according to the local soil type and available construction material to ensure quality and safety standards.
Provision of the charcoal producer' personal safety tools/uniforms to raise safety standards/ specifications at work sites.
The establishment of an environmental pathways of five kilometer long to present the wild life(animals, birds, trees , flowers and others) found in the area,where some of these wild lives are endangered species, several signs were installed along the pathway that include photos and names of species (animal and plants) and marked trail with a start and end point for the pathway.
