Natural crafts and women's development Pikin Slee
This project aims to support the handicraft women of the Maroon village of Pikin Slee situated at the upper Suriname river. This village is well known for its Maroon museum (the only known in Suriname) and the establishment of the Totomboti male wood carvers, whom art works have gained much popularity in Suriname and outside. This project focuses on the women, who have already received training in producing different handicrafts.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
The art of handicraft making is mainly left to the women. The men however are also very actively involved in this community, since you have an organized group of only men (Stichting Totomboti) who do wood carving.
Notable Community Participation
The community consists of around 2000 inhabitants. The women participating will be around 10 - 15. With this empowerment, we hope to encourage more women to practice this handicraft business.
